A Christmas Story
“Aunt Clara had for years labored under the delusion that I was not only perpetually 4 years old, but also a girl.”
Only two Christmas movies made the list of movies to get you to Christmas, and I’ve appropriately saved them for last. There are so many Christmas specials on in between Thanksgiving and December 25th, stop motion animation, musicals, Dr. Seuss or Charles Schulz classics and all of those things that clash and clutter up the television primetime spots that are usually filled with new episodes of The Mindy Project, New Girl, and Parks and Recreation. Needless to say, I get annoyed with Christmas-y things pretty easily. A Christmas Story is one of the only Christmas specials from my childhood that I respect as a timeless classic embodying the Christmas spirit.
One of my best friends lives in England, and it didn’t occur to me until a couple of days ago that she would have never seen this American classic. I can’t even imagine – I grew up watching this around Christmastime. My dad would guffaw and chortle and I would just sit back and wonder why it was so funny. As I’ve grown up watching Ralphie, I’ve come to understand the humor and stress behind each bit of the movie, and I’ve been eternally thankful that my mother didn’t take me to go see Santa Claus in the mall because until a few years ago, I genuinely thought mall Santa and his mall elves were that terrifying (fun fact: I’ve never believed in Santa).
This movie is weird, fun, and a Christmas classic. If you haven’t seen it, you should, and you can always catch it on TBS about a thousand times before New Years Eve.
