Cartoons too real to be just for kids

Gravity Falls

We need to take a minute to talk about the genius that is Gravity Falls.  The writing is absolutely incredible.  This show managed to twist me up into a labyrinth of mystery that I don’t ever want to escape.  I really can’t talk this show up enough.  There are ciphers and codes and everything ties in together.  I highly recommend this show to anybody – especially to anybody who really enjoys theorizing and feeling completely dumbfounded.  It’s exciting.  (Hint: if you do get into this show, make sure you look up what all the codes mean.  Unless you’ve solved them all yourself, in which case, you go! I’m too lazy for that junk.)

Notable guest stars: Will Forte, Nick Offerman, Nathan Fillion, Chris Parnell, Horatio Sanz, Lance Bass, Will Friedle, Mark Hamill, John Oliver, Patton Oswalt, Neil deGrasse Tyson, John O’Hurley (I would like to note that Alex Hirsch, Kristen Schaal, Linda Cardellini,  and Jason Ritter are regulars and that should be enough for you)

Over The Garden Wall

OTGW is too real to be just for kids, and it’s quite possibly too real for kids.  This show is a little bit terrifying.  That one episode with the turtles…man.  That kind of messed me up.  The artwork is incredible, the writing is hilarious, and the creepiness level is so high.  If you’re a tiny baby of a person like I am, you should probably watch it with the lights on.

Notable voice actors: Christopher Lloyd, Elijah Wood, John Cleese, Tim Curry, Thomas Lennon, Shannyn Sossamon.

Adventure Time

This show is so important.  Among many other real life issues, AT deals with PTSD, puberty and growing up, abandonment, dealing with physical disabilities, and it promotes gender equality, justice, honesty, and friendship.

Notable guest stars: Mark Hamill, George Takei, Neil Patrick Harris, Donald Glover, Andy Samberg (Bonus: according to the internet, they’re trying to eventually have the entire casts of The Office and Star Trek: TNG as guest stars)
